Behind the Seams: The Journey of a Pink Moon Product from Sketch to Store

At The Pink Moon, every collection is more than just a seasonal drop - it's curated carefully for every plus-size individual to celebrate confidence and expression. We believe fashion should never be limited by size, but to break boundaries and embrace curves. The Pink Moon’s vision has always been clear - to create a collection that’s bold, flattering, and unapologetically stylish, designed for real bodies and real confidence.

Let’s step into the world of Pink Moon and dive deeper into the “behind the scenes" of our latest collection. From discovering the inspiration, designing, fabric, creative process, and purpose that shaped each piece. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering Pinkmoon, this inside look will deepen your connection to the collection and the people who brought it to life.

Behind the Seams: How We Pick Our Fabrics

Choosing the right fabric is where the magic really begins. It’s not just about picking something that looks nice—it’s about finding the perfect match for the design, from the type of fabric and its weave to the prints and textures. After countless city-hopping trips, endless phone calls, vendor visits, and piles of swatches later, the fabric hunt is finally (almost) done. We’ve had long chats, tough calls, and plenty of back-and-forth to narrow it all down. Now, the first sample piece is ready—a little preview of what’s to come. If it checks all the boxes, it’s go-time: the fabric will be confirmed, and the bulk order will be on its way to our studio.

Our Design Journey: Where Fit Meets Fashion

Our top priority when designing is always the customer’s comfort and fit. We focus on what makes you feel confident—whether it's the neckline, the flare, or the overall outfit. Your satisfaction is at the heart of everything we do. Once that’s covered, we look at current trends and think about how we can make each design even better and easier to wear. Our team also checks which patterns can work in more colors or prints, and which fabrics from previous collections were a hit and could be used in new ways.

A big part of our inspiration comes from our Pink Moon Community—you! From your suggestions and poll votes on necklines or sleeve styles, to feedback on what you'd love to see next, your input helps shape our collections. After considering all of this, we finalize the designs and move on to the sampling stage.

The Sampling Stage: Where Designs Come to Life

Once the designs are finalized and approved, the sampling process begins. This stage involves creating a prototype of each garment to meticulously test every detail — from the neck depth and sleeve fit to the hip shaping and even the finer elements like buttons, zippers, belts, or waist-ties. A single piece is made for each design and goes through a thorough trial session. Based on feedback and discussions, adjustments may be made before the garment is approved. Only the best pieces move forward to the next stage — the photoshoot — signaling their inclusion in the upcoming collection. However, not every sample makes the cut. Some designs may be set aside due to various reasons and later offered in clearance sales. Meanwhile, the approved pieces are carefully packed and prepped for the shoot, ready to make their debut.

Behind the Scenes: The Catalogue Shoot Process

The shoot day begins with finalizing, counting, and carefully packing all the selected garments. We double-check to make sure every piece — along with its matching accessories and details like belts or ties — is accounted for. Once everything arrives at the studio, the garments are steamed and prepped while the model gets ready with hair and makeup. For a catalogue shoot, the makeup is usually subtle and clean to keep the focus on the clothes. Each look is styled and shot with attention to detail — the model’s appearance, background, and lighting are all planned to complement the garment. For example, lighter fabrics often need a different setup compared to darker ones to make them pop on camera. After each round of photos, we review them closely to ensure the garment is properly highlighted — checking lighting, fit, poses, and overall presentation. Any necessary adjustments are made on the spot.

Once the final shots are approved, we move on to cataloguing — editing, organizing, and getting everything ready to launch across all platforms.

The Production-to-Cataloging Workflow:

Bulk production of products or SKUs depends on several factors — such as the style, type of fabric, whether the product needs washing, how it performs once it goes live, and if it includes extra accessories like buttons or belts. Keeping all these points in mind, we set priorities for production accordingly.

First Priority:

We start with items that are more complex or require additional steps:

  • Long dresses, since they’re more complicated to cut and stitch.
  • Fabrics that require washing (like denim), to check color fastness, fading, or softness.
  • Products with accessories, such as belts or buttons — especially when buttons need to be dyed to match the garment color.
  • Core styles, which are our key or best-selling products.

Second Priority:

Next, we move to items we’re less certain about or want to test before going into full production:

  • Styles or fabrics that need approval or further review.
  • Products we want to wait on to see how they perform in sales before starting bulk production.

Once bulk production is completed, the final step is a detailed quality check. Each garment is inspected for loose threads, correct length, neckline, sleeve details, and the proper attachment of accessories like belts or buttons. After these checks, the production team signs off, marking the bulk as fully complete.

Meanwhile, the operations team begins the cataloging process, preparing the prioritized SKUs to go live across as many online portals as possible. This ensures that we can start shipping all the new products — the result of the combined effort, time, and dedication of every team member — to our valued customers, who have always been so patient and supportive throughout the process.

And that’s the magic behind every Pink Moon piece — a blend of imagination, craftsmanship, and care that starts with a single sketch and ends with something truly special in your hands. Every seam, stitch, and detail is a reflection of the creativity and dedication that fuel our team.
As we continue designing for the dreamers, the doers, and everyone in between, we hope you wear your Pink Moon pieces with the same love we pour into creating them.
